Learn more about Pāua, the New Zealand Abalone

Pāua, known internationally as abalone, is a unique marine mollusc found in the pristine waters of New Zealand. A type of sea snail from the Haliotis family, it is renowned for its vibrant, iridescent shell shimmering in rich blues, greens and purples. Native to New Zealand, pāua is considered one of the most beautiful abalones in the world.

Across the country, you’ll find jewellery crafted from pāua shell and restaurants serving it in delicious traditional dishes. While wild stocks are carefully managed for sustainability, some populations remain under pressure.

At Arapawa Blue Pearls, we run a sustainable pāua farm dedicated to cultivating some of the rarest pearls in the world, while helping support and reseed New Zealand’s coastline. Our pearl cultivation process is truly unique, and we honour the pāua by thoughtfully using every part.

Tour of pearls made from Abalones is fascinating. This small family ran operation began 30 years ago on a shoestring, and with education and hard work, has turned into a profitable business for these New Zealanders. Learn how the seeds are planted. Learn about the growing cycle of the Abalones and pearls. Nicest family. Buy a blue pearl souvenir if you desire.

My family and I enjoyed visiting Arapawa . Antonia and her family are very friendly. They live on a beautiful island and produce beautiful pearls. I bought a ring from them and left it there for resize to fit my hand. They sent it to my address in Sydney and made sure I received it when I returned. They were honest, reliable and provided very good service.
I wish them the very best in future.

What an excellent surprise!! Antonia, Mike and Jacob welcomed us to their island as though we were friends. Our tour began with a delicious tea with home baked goodies and delicious cooked paua. The family gave an informal yet very informative presentation about their process and history. I loved that the conversation just flowed and we found many connections!! The blue pearl jewelry is exquisite. The styling highlights the gorgeous pearls. We purchased earrings and a matching necklace. I also appreciated that the purchase was led by us and there was no pressure to buy. A fabulous afternoon with the bonus of new friends!! May our paths cross again!

This is a must do bucket list experience. The Paua farming and pearl growing operation is unique and not something you can see anywhere else in NZ. We had a wonderful tour complete with delicious homemade morning tea. My wife has some exquisite pearl earrings and also a beautiful necklace, not only are the pearls grown on the farm, the setting and jewelry is also designed and hand made locally, all from this small family business, built on dedication to the fine jewelry and the customer experience.

What an impressive place, impressive couple and team but most importantly, what an impressive project! A pearl farm in a paradise, splendid pearls with incredible colours and reflects and an exquisite choice of jewelry. If you come to New Zealand, this is a must. In addition, to get there, take a water taxi from Picton and you will have a magnificent journey by the sea with plenty of wild dauphins in a luxuriant nature. Thank you Antonia and spouse!

PS: delicious coffee plus break!
